Ray King (a retired Methodist Minister) visited Husthwaite some years ago and wrote about his blacksmith ancestors Feb 2013 (article also in the history website) and has remained in contact. Recently Bunny Wentworth unearthed some old photos of her husband Philip’s Slater family and of the Long family who were related by marriage when Annie Muriel Slater married John Leslie Long the blacksmith, Ray King’s grandparents.
These photos in the form of postcards with short notes on the back had been collected by members of the Slater family. Annie Muriel, the daughter of Tom Slater who started the well known Slaters agricultural machinery firm, sadly died of TB at the age of 45. She and John Leslie Long had five children, a daughter Joyce who married and remained in the York area, Winifred who married Ernest King in York, (parents of Ray and Pauline King) whilst the three youngest children – Raymond, Myrtle and Gerald all married then emigrated to Australia in the late 1940s and early 50s.
Shipping passenger lists give that Raymond Long aged 29, a fitter, and his wife Jean aged 25, housewife, sailed on the P & O line Chitral from London, departing 29 July 1949 and disembarked at Melbourne. They had lived at 6 Fleming Ave, Heworth, York and had a daughter Pauline in Australia. A year later the Orient line ship Orcades sailed from London to Melbourne, with Jean’s parents Walter, electrician, and his wife Rose (née King), and daughter Pauline, an art student aged 17 (who later became a dressmaker) from 37 Heworth Rd, York. Walter’s sister Alice Gray from 6 Fleming Ave, Heworth, a comptometer operator aged 53 also went with them.
Myrtle and her husband William Sudron, a brass finisher, from 16 Beech Ave, Holgate, York sailed to Adelaide in 1952 with their children Joan, 6 and Michael, 4. Their son John was born in Australia. Gerald Long, a clerical railways employee, his wife Sheila Gray (Jean’s sister) and daughter Christine aged 4, from 153 Askham Lane, Ascomb, Yorks., emigrated from Southampton on 7.12.1957 to Melbourne.
